Schick Electric Razors

In 1905 Schick was assigned to Fort Gibbon, in Tanana, Alaska, a staging camp for military construction projects at the convergence of the Yukon and Tanana rivers. During his five years at the outpost, he participated in the building of more than a thousand miles of communication line in the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System, much of it in remote frozen terrain. Responding to tactical needs, Schick designed modifications for the sternwheeler steamboats that moved army construction barges, affording them more reliable passage through shallow river points. The army adopted Schick's ideas for the design of USS General J. W. Jacobs (1913) and for other vessels used in Alaskan waters.
